I'm not convinced by Graeber's denial of the evolution of developmental complexity over time, and his voluntarist assumptions on social change. I think his historical material, I've read about half the book, is actually mostly about time periods <before> the more classic and imperial structures became hegemonic in the core areas of Eurasia (just as the variety existing in the 16th cy Europe does not bely the eventually hegemony of nation-states).
